India's capital Wakes Up to Toxic Pollution Following Diwali

Tuesday brought residents of the planet's dirtiest urban center found themselves inhaling extremely polluted air that fell into the "severe" level.

Alarming Pollution Readings

Various sections of Delhi registered an pollution measurement exceeding 500, which equals 10x the safe limit recommended by the WHO.

In some locations, readings of PM2.5 and PM10 reached peaks of eighteen hundred, representing 15 to 20 times exceeding healthy levels.

Fireworks Prohibition and New Policy Shifts

Beginning in 2020, officials had implemented a total prohibition on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during Diwali due to their major role to the hazardous pollution that covers the capital as winter approaches.

Nevertheless earlier this year, the recently formed regional leadership appealed to the highest court to propose a modification of the prohibition.

Officials advocated for allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – previously questioned by environmentalists as being only roughly 30 percent reduced emissions – as a middle ground between "heritage and environment".

Legal Decision and Reality

To the disappointment of environmental and health activists, judicial authorities complied with the proposal, stipulating that green firecrackers could be ignited during limited hours throughout the festival.

During the celebrations, there was widespread disregard of the regulated periods across the city, with insufficient enforcement regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the supposedly greener type.

Numerous monitoring devices throughout Delhi recorded contamination reaching highest levels around late evening to extremely hazardous measurements seen during celebrations in at least the past three years.

Regional Effects

The proliferation of fireworks during the festival also initiated a dispute with neighbouring Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistani Punjab province partly blaming declining atmospheric conditions in the city of Lahore on pollutants coming from India following the celebrations.

Chronic Pollution Issue

The dangerously high concentrations of atmospheric toxins in the city have remained as a serious challenge for over a decade and a half, with the problem gradually deteriorating.

Around celebratory seasons, the amount of dangerous airborne contaminants in the atmosphere has been observed to increase dramatically to 70% higher the peak readings ever documented in China's capital, which was once considered as the planet's dirtiest city.

This crisis in the city is caused by a combination of various sources including automobile exhaust, dust, construction activities, waste incineration and haze from crop residue ignition in nearby regions of neighboring agricultural zones.

In these regions, farmers routinely burn crop residue to prepare for next season, producing hazardous smog that then gets trapped over the capital as colder air descends.

Public Health and Financial Consequences

Public health and economic impact on the roughly thirty-three million inhabitants residing in the metropolitan zone is significant, according to multiple investigations.

These hazardous conditions results in elevated rates of neurological, cardiovascular and breathing conditions, and can result in malignancies.

Air quality crisis is projected to be causing 10,000 premature deaths per year in the capital.
